MTR Foods sponsors lunches for 20 Indian schools
The Indian Orkla-company MTR Foods will provide meals for more than 2000 children. The initiative is part of the Orkla Friends Fund which monthly sponsors a charitable cause with NOK 100,000.
MTR Foods has partnered with The Akshaya Patra Foundation to provide mid-day meals to more than 2000 children from 20 schools in Surathkal, India for one year. The programme was inaugurated by Mr. Sanjay Sharma, CEO, MTR Foods, Mr. Ganesh Shenoy, VP – IT and Finance, MTR Foods and Mr. Sundeep Talwar, Chief Marketing Officer, Akshaya Patra Foundation on 23 September 2015.
“Today is a very emotional day for us at MTR. We have always strongly believed in giving back to the society and the community in which we operate and today we are delighted to launch the “Namma Makkalu, Namma MTR” Programme. We have started this initiative in the place our founders originated from – Dakshin Kannada but we intend on expanding the program to other districts in Karnataka as the year progresses, to reach out to as many schools as we can”, said Mr. Sharma.
The programme is jointly funded by The Orkla Friends Fund and MTR Foods. The main objective of the programme is to provide nutritious food to children in order to promote education and learning and hence, reduce illiteracy among children.
“The Mid-Day Meal programme has been hugely beneficial and successful throughout the country. The mission of Akshaya Patra Foundation is to reach 5 million children by 2020 and so far we have been able to touch the lives of children across India with help of organisations like MTR Foods. We are glad to have them as our partners and hope more organizations would come forward to help us achieve our objective. We would also like to thank the State Government and the Mid-Day Meal officials for their continued involvement and support”, said Mr. Talwar.
About the Orkla Friends Fund
The Orkla Friends Fund was conceived as a way of fulfilling Orkla’s new vision “Your friend in everyday life”. The award will primarily be made within the category “Nutrition and Health”, but “Corporate Responsibility” will be an alternative. Every month, an Orkla company will have the honour of designating a fortunate recipient of NOK 100,000 from the Orkla Friends Fund. It is up to the local company to determine which recipient should receive the contribution. This is the first grant from the Orkla Friends Fund. Mr. Sharma has passed the relay baton to Petter Hellman, CEO of Lilleborg Profesjonell, who will donate NOK 100,000 to a charity in October.
