Orkla shares its sustainability thinking at UN meeting

Orkla participated in a Nordic Network meeting organised by the UN Global Compact on 13 October 2016. 

The meeting agenda featured the UN’s global Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the role of business.

The UN Global Compact held a Nordic Network meeting in Oslo on 13 October 2016. In speakers’ presentations, workshops and debates, representatives of business and industry and experts discussed solutions that can support the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Among the speakers were Ellen Behrens, Orkla VP Corporate Responsibility, and Hege Holter Brekke, CEO of the Orkla company Pierre Robert Group.

Commitment to deforestation-free supply chains

In 2015, in good company with Global Compact companies all over the world, Orkla put the UN’s new global goals for sustainable development on its agenda. At the meeting Orkla presented its efforts to promote zero deforestation, which target SDG 15.

“Deforestation accounts for 10–15% of global greenhouse gas emissions. By engaging actively in our own supply chains, we can make an important difference. Our goal is to ensure that all our key agricultural products and packaging are sustainably produced – without causing deforestation – by 2020,” says Ellen Behrens.

In collaboration with Truls Gulowsen from Greenpeace Norge, Ellen Behrens provided advice on how companies can work to ensure deforestation-free supply chains.

From responsible sourcing to sustainable textiles

Sustainability has been on Pierre Robert Group’s agenda for several years. At the meeting, Hege Holter Brekke talked about the journey from focusing on responsible sourcing to becoming a company that has made sustainability an integral part of its business strategy:

“Pierre Robert Group has been working on social and environmental issues related to textile production for years, and we’ve moved steadily from responsible sourcing to proactive sustainable production. We’re following a comprehensive sustainability strategy with specific goals and points of action,” says Hege Holter Brekke

“Among other things, for our Wool Collection we’ve replaced conventional viscose with environmentally friendly Tencel®, and we have GOTS-certified our Cotton Lingerie Collection. GOTS-certification starts with organic cotton, but has sustainability requirements for all stages of the production process”, she adds.
