Site complete for “Orkla Children’s Village” in Vietnam

Orkla is financing an entire SOS Children’s Village in Vietnam. Construction work on the Children’s Village will start according to plan sometime in 2010 and hopefully be completed in 2012.

Orkla is covering the construction costs, and several of the Group’s subsidiaries also want to contribute, in order to ensure that the Orkla Children’s Village is fully financed.

A secure home for 140 children

The new Orkla Children’s Village will be built six kilometres outside the mountain village of Pleiku in the Gia Lai province, situated on the highland plateau along the boundary with Cambodia. The Children’s Village will consist of 14 family homes, a collective building, a guesthouse, a house for the manager of the Children’s Village, two buildings for employees, and an administration building. At full capacity, 140 children will have a secure home here.

The Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs (MOLISA) in Vietnam and the social authorities in the province of Gia Lai asked SOS Children’s Villages in September 2008 to build a new children’s village in this area. The authorities offered SOS Children’s Villages a fairly large site in Pleiku, and with financial support from Orkla in order to cover expenses during development, the new Children’s Village and associated facilities will be turned into reality.

Major need

Despite positive economic development in Vietnam, there are few resources in the welfare sector and the need for aid for children in need of help is enormous. It is thought that there are more than 5000 children in the Gia Lai province living under extremely poor conditions. More than 2000 children have lost their mother, their father or both parents. Moreover, poverty means that many families are unable to support their children.

SOS Children’s Villages is the biggest organisation in the world working to promote the interests of orphaned and neglected children. In Norway, Orkla has been its main partner since 2000. To date, Orkla has contributed NOK 17 million to the establishment of SOS Children’s Villages in Russia, Latvia and Romania.
