Orkla Health acquires W. Ratje Frøskaller

Orkla Health has entered into an agreement to purchase 100% of the Danish company W. Ratje Frøskaller (WRF).


With this acquisition, Orkla is strengthening its position in the gut health segment, which is a rapidly growing area. Additionally, the acquisition will strengthen Orkla Home & Personal generally within the pharmacy market.

WRF manufactures and markets fibre products under the HUSK brand, serving Denmark, Sweden and Norway as its main markets. WRF has three product ranges consisting of a fibre product approved as an herbal medicine for relief of digestive complaints, a fibre dietary supplement and gluten-free fibre for baking and cooking.

“The purchase of WRF strengthens Orkla Home & Personal’s position in the pharmacy market. Moreover, products that promote healthy digestion are an interesting new category for Orkla Health. We have identified potential opportunities for value creation in the form of both increased sales and cost synergies,” says Henning Søgaard, CEO Orkla Health.

Since 1985, Orkla Health has had an agreement with WRF for the distribution of HUSK products to grocery and health food stores in Denmark. WRF has itself handled the distribution of its products to pharmacies and to other countries. A little over 60% of the company’s turnover is generated in Denmark where the HUSK brand holds a strong position. Other sales come from exports, primarily to Sweden and Norway.

WRF had a turnover of approx. DKK 40 million (approx. NOK 45 million) in the most recent financial year. The parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.

The company was founded in 1979 by Werner Ratje and is currently owned and operated by the second generation, Bettina and Michael Ratje. HUSK is manufactured in Denmark at the company’s own production facility and is based on natural fibre of the absolutely highest purity. The company has seven employees.
